At times, marketing your business online can seem incredibly complicated. On any given day, you may see 20 different tips being thrown at you for improving your marketing.

I'm as guilty of ignoring this advice as anyone else. At times in my business I have spent 99% of my marketing effort on getting more traffic, and ignoring techniques to turn more of those visitors into customers.

Now, my sites consistently convert over 1.5% of visitors into customers, sometimes more, but rarely less.

Now that seems pretty good - but what if I could get that to be 2%, 2.5% or more on a consistent basis.

With over 15,000 visitors per month on just one of my sites, that could mean a very major increase in customers and revenue!

In fact, logic would dictate I should be spending more time focused on conversion than generating traffic - so thats what I'm doing.

Web marketers see it all of the time.

Companies of every size and description still have unrealistic expectations with online marketing.

Many can be described as web wannabees because they have no clear objectives for the Internet. There is also no vision or concept for being on the Web, other than a vague and urgent perception that "I've got to be on the Web now." 3. Am I willing to "stick it out?" The web site should evolve as marketing conditions and customer relationships develop. Success on the Web is often measured over an extended period of time. Overnight web success is elusive.

Last week, I wrote my first marketing/list building article. Could not get the activity out of my mind.

So, here are two more....the second one a doozie!

First, as I am doing day after day, build an ongoing TIPS series....mine is called Health, WellBeing and Gardening. Container Gardening was mind relieving as I assisted my mother, an Alzheimers' patient, during the last years of her life.

The wonder about TIPS is that they keep your mind going, keep you reading, sharpen your ability to make connections. So, from Apple Orchards to fields of Zinnias, think TIPS... Sign on to read mine... I am developing a great bibliography.

After completing my 400 item TIPS collection, I will produce a VIRAL product in e-book form. I will reserve authorship and two links for myself.. and give the Tips away to other internet marketers who will imbed their links .....and so it goes.

My second marketing idea.....I don't think I can come up with anything better.....is MAKE GIFTS OF WEBSITES to town, county, neighborhood and larger area business owners.

Start off by going to www.Google.com looking for cheap websites. I found NINE MILLION entries ...name registration, hosting, templates...Start up cost should be about $100 or so, with $15 or so dollars monthly for hosting and odds and ends.

When you are good at it, you should be able to get sites up and running in sixty to ninety minutes. You might even walk into a business owner's office with your portable computer, a template website at the ready....and suggestions of the language of the site. If it would work, a business owner may want to record part of the language of the site....

Here is the benefit for you......at the end of each site is YOUR resource box.....one/two lines about you, and one/two lines about your business.

Go with this.....see what happens!!....BUILD THAT LIST!

Everybody makes mistakes, but nobody likes to talk about them. We feel silly and foolish, even though we could not possibly have known. I know I have made many mistakes during my online business career and it's embarassing! While my rational brain knows it is not really true, my irrational brain thinks that the whole world has seen my mistake and is pointing and laughing at me.

One of my biggest mistakes was not getting the account information when I first registered my domain. That may sound silly to some, but as a beginner I had no idea how to register a domain name or what I might need the login information for. I had my host register it and everything worked fine, great! Eventually, when I wanted to change hosts, I started to think about how to access my registration account. I had to ask the host and luckily they gave it to me with no problem.

Another early mistake was uploading web pages with graphics that included the wrong path. I know a lot of people do this when they start. You want to include a graphic from your hard drive on your web page, so you select it and it looks gorgeous. Great! You upload the page. Unfortunately, people online can't see the graphic because the web site is looking for it on YOUR hard drive! Worse is when your helpful computer supplies the image from your hard and you don't realize that the rest of the world can't see it!

SPAM. Almost everyone sends some SPAM when they start, mostly without even knowing it. Replying to ad confirmation emails is not allowed, who knew? And buying a list to send ads to is also SPAM. Those people didn't say, "Cathy, send me your ad," so they cannot be considered an "opt-in" list. Again who knew? Outblaze STILL won't let my mail get through to some domains! To this day I wonder how list sellers can get away with it.

How long did it take you to realize you must always include mailing list addresses in the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) field of your email message? Not long for me! I had people writing me hate mail immediately because I was displaying their address to everyone on my list! One kind, but snide, person clued me in to using the Bcc field.

How about posting an ad with no URL? Come on! You've done it! I've done it, too. :)

Less common mistakes I've made include editing a bit of ad copy that had finally made it to the first page a huge site. That little boo-boo put my ad at the end of the list, totally burying it again.

I tried a loading page once. One that said "Please wait while the site is loading" so that viewers would see the complete page at once instead of loading bit by bit. BIG MISTAKE! Nobody ever bothered to wait.

I've changed hosts and forgot to include subdirectories when I uploaded the site to the new server.

I've had various bugs, bad URL's and web site snafus that are really too numerous to mention. I have grown to hate cgi.

I don't know if this is really my mistake, but it sure looked like one to a brand new client. My hard drive crashed right in the middle of emailing back and forth with him. It took me several days to repair it and I never heard from him again.

I hope this will help you to avoid some of the most common online business mistakes. If you've already made them, at least you know you are not alone.

3) Low Startup and Overhead Expenses

Low startup and overhead expenses mean low risk. If you try opening a retail store, manufacturing plant or other offline business, chances are you'll need several thousand dollars just to open your doors, let alone pay the monthly bills. Not so with an Internet business, which you can start, build, promote and maintain on a shoestring budget.

My basic business expenses include web hosting, Internet access, and a few odds and ends totalling well under $200 a month, yet my web sites generate six-figures yearly.

4) Tremendous Marketing Reach

Of course, one of the greatest advantages of the Internet is the ability to reach huge numbers of prospects for our products and services.

And I'm talking about ethically reaching prospects who are interested in what we have to offer; NOT about sending unsolicited email, or spam, that most of us love to hate.

The Internet is one of the greatest breakthroughs in communication since the printing press, and at the same less expensive and more versatile than virtually any other marketing method.

Estimates on the number of existing Internet users are staggering, not to mention new users who sign on daily.

I could go on and on about the various advantages of an online business, but you get the point. If you've been thinking about starting your own Internet venture, keep the above advantages in mind. They are just a few of many that make the Internet an entrepreneurs' dream.
